In partnership with Spero Stuttering, we have written an open letter to Plural Publishing and Dr. M.N. Hegde, speaking out against harmful techniques and methods suggested in their recently published Clinical Methods and Practicum in Speech-Language Pathology, Seventh Edition.
This textbook contains alarming and dangerous directions attempting to increase fluency in young children, including advocating for "time outs", negative reinforcement, and “pause and talk better” prompts. At SPACE and Spero, we know this language and approach is unacceptable.
Along with a strong coalition of organizations and individuals community members, we respectfully and firmly call on Plural Publishing and Dr. Hegde to:

Immediately retract or revise the harmful stuttering content in this edition of Clinical Methods and Practicum in Speech-Language Pathology.

Issue a formal statement acknowledging the potential harm caused by promoting punitive fluency-focused interventions for stuttering.

Convene a diverse advisory panel of speech-language pathologists, researchers, and people who stutter to guide the development of future stuttering-related content.

Commit to including contemporary, evidence-based, and human-centered stuttering practices in all future publications.
